“What’s the weather like up there?” I’ve heard that a few times. I stand 6’3” high from the earth and am constantly surrounded by big bastards. My dad is 6’1” my wife’s dad is 6’1”, my wife is almost 6’, my brother towers over me at 6’4”, Matthew is too tall for a 4 year old, my one and only friend is 6’1”ish, my boss at work is 6’3” as well. Amongst all these giants in my life there is an anomaly. A little person who couldn’t look down on a smurf. Her name is Maya and she’s my little nugget. She so small, so delicate, so cute and so out of place. But her uniqueness makes her all that more noticeable. She’s always underfoot, constantly getting trampled but she’s never overlooked. Her personality makes up in size for her lack there of. This came to me last night as I laid it bed with her and protected her from the scary fish from Disney’s Sword In The Stone movie. She made me wrap my arm around her delicate tiny little body and she just watched with growing concern for her safety as the big fish menaced Merlin and Arthur. Such a small little miracle. It makes me adore her even more and pains me that as I write this she’s growing up without my permission.

Doing?
July 1, 2008Maya has broken out the multi-syllabic words. She can say with ease things like Monkey, Matthew, Turkey, Daddy, Chipmunk among with a few others I can’t recall right at this moment. But by far her favourite (based on times per use) is the word “doing”. This one word to Maya is a complete sentence. What I mean by that is, she has condensed the non important fluff of a complete sentence into this one word. Let me elaborate:
ENGLIGH: “Excuse me, I couldn’t help but notice from across the room that you were doing something interesting over here; would you be so kind as to tell me what this particular activity you are engaged in is all about?”
MAYA: “Doing?!”
Most times, the single word version is not enough. So she elaborates a little:
MAYA: “Doing? Doing? Dooooing?!”
She’s on a brilliant campaign to simplify the English language. Eliminate the needless chit-chat and get right to the point. Here’s another Maya-simplified statement:
ENGLISH: “Excuse me, I couldn’t help but notice from across the room that you were preparing to go somewhere; would you be so kind as to tell me where it is that you departing to?”
MAYA: “Going?!”
And the multi word version:
MAYA: “Going? Going? Gooooing?!”
Sometimes however, she does get carried away with her incessant curiosity and nosebudding-inning. She asked my son about 15 times “doing” while he was playing with his articulating wheel loader so he answered her very abruptly and with obvious vex in his voice:
MAYA: “Doing? Doing? Doing? Doing? Doing? Doing? Doing? Doing? Doing? Doing?
MATTHEW: “What do you thing I’m doing!!!!!!”
Unfortunately his answer to her repeated questioning was unsatisfactory so she asked him again repeatedly until he got fed up and left. As he left:
MAYA: “Going? Going??”
